‘He has come back from the dead’: The comedy legend spent eight days in a medically induced coma during the health crisis.

The famed comedian experienced a “near fatal” cardiac event that resulted in him being put into an medically induced coma during the pandemic, according to a recent documentary about the American actor and comedian.

As documented in I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, the star of films such as Caddyshack and the National Lampoon series, who emceed the Oscars twice, spent a total of five weeks in the medical facility.

“Something was wrong, and he was unable to describe to me what was wrong. So, we went to the ER. His heart gave out. During those years he was drinking, he developed cardiomyopathy; when the heart muscles get weaker, and they are unable to pump as much blood out with each beat.”

Medical professionals then put him into a coma for eight days, before advising his daughter, Caley: “He may not recover. We don’t know how aware he’ll be. You must prepare for the worst.”

“Upon waking, all he was able to do was use his vocal cords,” she added. “He has practically come back from the dead.”

Chase himself has stated that he has suffered recall difficulties since his hospital stay, and in the project he fails to recall some of his past on-set and backstage disputes, including a fight with fellow comedian Bill Murray in a Saturday Night Live dressing room.

Chase said he was “upset” by his exclusion from the milestone special of SNL recently, at which he was in attendance but not on stage.

“To be frank, it was disappointing,” he said. “I haven't spoken about this until now. But I expected that I would’ve been on the stage too with all the other actors. When co-stars Garrett and Laraine Newman took the stage, I was curious as to why I was not. I wasn't invited. Why was I excluded?”

Now 82, Chase, nearly lost his life in 1980 when he was subjected to an electrical shock on the set of Modern Problems, an accident which led to a period of depression.
